For low-stakes documents (a meeting recap, a general-interest article), that may not matter. For high-stakes documents (a contract you're about to sign, a research finding you're going to cite, a compliance report you're submitting), it's a serious problem. The antidote is traceability: knowing which part of the source document each point in the summary came from, so you can read the original when a point matters. A summary that references the source — or that's generated through a tool where you can ask follow-up questions to get the underlying passage — is more trustworthy than one that just produces a block of synthesized text.
Even a well-executed AI summary has predictable blind spots.
A contract clause might say "liability is limited to $50,000 except in cases of gross negligence or willful misconduct." A summary might say "liability is limited to $50,000" — accurate but incomplete in a way that matters. Exceptions, carve-outs, and conditional provisions are often where the risk lives, and they're the hardest for summaries to preserve.
A definition in section 1 affects how a provision in section 8 should be read. A summary of section 8 may not reflect the section 1 definition if the AI didn't connect the cross-reference. Intra-document dependencies are a consistent weak point in AI summarization.
AI summarization excels at representing what is in a document.
